Introduction

SEO is an interesting field because it covers a large portion of website and webserver technology. Many times, people who are having problems with their rankings are having them not because of traditional SEO issues like keyword usage or links, but rather more fundamental underlying issues such as redirects, DNS and coding.

As I tell my clients, the first step in winning a race is to make sure that your race car actually works. All the planning and driving skill in the world won’t help you if the car won’t start, just as all the keywords and links in the world won’t help you if a spider can’t visit your site because it’s down or misconfigured.

In our experience, up to 60% of all complaints about loss of rankings can be attributed to technological issues, rather than being hit with some sort of penalty.
